The Presence (2010) is not what I expected, but it’s good, nonetheless. It stars Shane West as Ghost, and it’s not exactly revealed who he was. For whatever reason, he is trapped in a cabin on an island and cannot leave. When the Woman arrives, he begins to watch her, and it’s on the creepy side.

thepresences_pThe only character with a name is Mr. Browman, played by Muse Watson, and we only see him a few times. I don’t mind it when movies that don’t assign names like John, etc., it saves me from having to remember them. Another interesting bit about this movie is that at the beginning, there is no dialogue. This aspect made it almost soothing, which is what the Woman was wanting when she returned to the cabin after many years of not visiting.

When the Man arrived, the dialogue began, and it disrupted something pleasant in The Presence, and I wasn’t happy with it, and neither was the Woman; it changed the tone of the film. He’s her fiance, and it seems that she has trouble getting close to people because of events in her past.

With the addition of the Man in Black (I kept thinking Dark Tower, and he was a little like that), who whispers in the Woman’s ear as she writes, I figured the frights were sure to come, and there were a few thrills but nothing over the top. Toward the end, the final character, the Woodsman, arrives, and there is more chaos with his involvement, but still nothing too intense.

The Presence is one of those movies that end with deep thoughts, which for a change, I didn’t mind. That said, this was not horror and barely a thriller, which I expected and led to believe.

4 Stars

Due to the merits of The Presence, I gave it 4 out of 5 Stars.
