Pumpkins (2018) was a refreshing change from many of the horror movies I’ve seen recently. It has an 80s feel that I wasn’t sure was intentional, but totally worked, reminding me of Pumpkinhead (1988). The cheese level is extraordinary, another thing I wasn’t sure was intentional.
The effects were great for a low budget film, the vines and the pumpkin mask are my favorites. The acting had its highs and lows but it didn’t matter, I loved what I was seeing. The story is a standard slasher with a revenge theme, though I’m not sure why the pumpkin man went after all the people he did, but that’s part of the joy of these types of movies; it just doesn’t matter.
I liked how they used what they had available to them to make Pumpkins. It’s definitely a DIY film, which adds to the magic of this joyride. The setting is primarily the woods, and then a local pub in the middle of a field, kind of like the one the boys in American Werewolf in London (1981) find themselves.
If you find yourself wondering what to watch, give Pumpkins a try, I think you’ll get a chuckle out of it. I give it 3.5 out of 5 Stars.
