When Tone-Deaf (2019) first started, I wasn’t sure that I was actually watching the correct film. It was Olive’s boring life, breaking up with her boyfriend and losing her job. Then they introduced Harvey with his bizarre monologue, and I just shook my head. At that point, I still wasn’t sure if I was watching the right movie or an extended SNL skit.

tone-deaf_pOnce Olive arrives at the house that she rented for the weekend, the darkness comes flowing in thicker, and it’s like a strange wonderland with creepy Harvey lurking. When he starts killing, it’s comical, but that’s what they intended from this horror-comedy. The gore is pretty good for what this movie is, and the strangeness of it upped my score in the end.

Even with the interludes with Olive calling her friend or Mom as a sort of comic relief, the edginess continues through the film. Even Harvey’s lucid commentary became harsher. But the question was for me almost the entire time was why. I still couldn’t tell you Harvey’s motivation besides him being delusional and needed to be put in assisted living as his son had suggested.

3.5 Stars

If you expect a serious horror film, don’t watch Tone-Deaf (you’ll figure out the title when you watch it). I liked it and gave it 3.5 out of 5 Stars.
