Color Out of Space (2019) is another interpretation of the written work of H.P. Lovecraft. I reviewed the 1965 and 1987 versions in a previous post that you can find here; this is similar to the 1987 rendition. Since this version has the same producer Mandy (2018), I had hope that it would be better than good. I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed.
While the beginning was a little slow as soon as the meteor hit the ground it took off running. The gross-out effects amazing, I just wish there’d been more, but that’s me, I always want more. The CGI wasn’t anything spectacular, but at least were consistent throughout. The flowers remind me of the ones in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). All in all, I enjoyed all the visuals presented, especially the weird angles in the woods at the beginning.
Nick Cage stars in Color Out of Space and gave a performance that I didn’t expect, kind of like his role in Mandy. Maybe, he should do more movies for this company as they seem to squeeze something different from him. In the end, though, it was Mr. Cage who brought home the prize for me.
All three versions give their best with presenting and interpreting H.P. Lovecraft’s story, but I still like The Curse (1987) the most, but this one is a strong contender.
I give Color Out of Space 3.5 out of 5 Stars.
