On day 23, I asked if you’d heard of romantic horror. Well now it’s day 27 of 30 Days of Terror, and I bring it up again. This time, it is more relevant because there’s an unexpected element in Let Us Prey (2014). If you don’t see this movie, you’ll never have the experience.
Sometimes I come across films filled with unexpected elements and I’m blown away with the mastery of the craft; this goes for books, too. With Let Us Prey I thought it was going to be like The Crazies or Bye Bye Man, but what it turned into was so much more.
I love Angels
An Angel of sorts appears, bringing a murder of crows or, maybe, a suspicion of ravens, I can never tell the difference, into a small town. While it is reminiscent of Needful Things and other films, they went beyond. The effects, camera work, and musical score made the movie tense, which is always a good thing in horror, as is the foreboding that lurked around every corner.
The acting, while a little rough at moments, is believable and honest. Liam Cunningham is Six, referring to the cell he’s in in the small town jail since he never gave his name. Looking through his filmography on IMDb, I’ve never seen him in anything else; nope, I’ve never seen Game of Thrones. The rest of the cast is just as good as him, including Pollyanna McIntosh, who is another I didn’t recognize; don’t watch Walking Dead either. Douglas Russell is the only one of the cast who I knew and that was from Outlander.
The strangeness of the individual stories gave me a good insight to the characters and their sins. Then the ending came, turning the horrors into a dark but beautiful romance. I didn’t mention the gore as I left it general as effects, but I should say that the level of blood and violence is exponentially more than I dreamed this movie would have.
I enjoyed the events that I witnessed in Let Us Prey, and give it 4 out of 5 Stars.
