I have enjoyed all of the Conjuring Universe movies. However, I like the ones with Ed and Lorraine Warren more. The Nun (2018) is dark and brooding, almost like it’s wishing it was better and had more chills.
The story is developed well enough to allow for more frightening scenes. Maybe, it’s me, but of course I’m going to jump when the music crescendos and something jumps out of the shadows. Don’t get me wrong, I do like this movie and everything it offered, I just wanted more.
The set is what I expect for the time period being represented in the story. The costumes and makeup are good. The bits that are scary really work, but there’s a lot of bland time throughout the movie until it gets to the climax. The clips from the other Conjuring movies for me were clutter that weren’t needed. Anyone seeing The Nun more than likely has seen the other Conjuring movies, but I guess for those that haven’t it gave a point of reference.
Taissa Farmiga was a great choice to play Sister Irene as she gives a nice connection to the Conjuring films with Ed and Lorraine as Vera, her sister, plays Lorraine. Father Burke’s portrayal by Demián Bichir was good, though I wish there could’ve been more to his role, but alas, I didn’t write the script.
If you haven’t seen The Nun, I do recommend it as it has more redeeming qualities than I’ve talked about. I give it 4 out of 5 Stars.
