#HorrorMovie Review – The Haunting (1999)

Having read Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, while not recently but most details are still in my mind, this movie was painful to watch. I’m not sure if I’ve seen the original film from 1963 for comparison, but I would hope that it is much better than this. I love Lili Taylor and she was the saving grace even when her role was screwed up.

An example of inconsistencies is when Mary is taken to town to the hospital after dark, and they are able to unlock the gate to let her leave. But when Nell is sick, they can’t unlock the gate; it’s the little details.

Many things are missing that would’ve made this great, like Luke as the heir to the Cain fortune, Mrs. Montague (Marrow) joining the escapade. If they’d done better with the movie, I guess I could’ve overlooked the missing pieces, but this movie is basically a big suck for me. Sometimes taking “creative license” is cool, but why when you have something a magnificent as The Haunting of Hill House why would you take it in this direction?

I give it 2 out of 5 Stars.
