I cannot explain the amazing beauty of Apostle (2018) without giving too many spoilers. It’s twisty and strange and dark. I can never be sure with Netflix movies if I’m going to be happy, but with this one, they didn’t let me down. (As a side note, it’s hard to keep up with everything new Netflix releases, too.)
Dan Stevens (The lead actor from one of my favorite TV Series, Legion.) plays Thomas Richardson, who goes to a Welsh island to rescue his sister from a cult. Michael Sheen (I know him from Masters of Sex. Yes, I watched it and loved it.) is also in Apostle, playing Malcom Howe, a convict, who founded the cult.
The story takes place in 1905, and the only thing I can find to criticize is the fact that they have gleaming white teeth, otherwise, the costuming is great, and the set is astounding. The contraptions are diabolical, and unexpected; again, I don’t want to give much away. The Grinder is an unexpected delight, bringing a layer of gore that wasn’t over the top and well played.
Please see Apostle on Netflix, it’s amazing. I give it 5 out of 5 Stars.
