Burnt Offerings (1976) for me is like a twisted baby of Hill House and The Shining that has a cousin at the Bates Motel. I’m still unsure why it has the title it does. That aside, I found it quite entertaining. I think Bette Davis’ role is the lowest-key character I’ve seen her play. She’s like strange comic relief, but when her drama kicks in, wow, that’s the woman I love. There’s not many who can give face the way she does.
The story, like I said, feels like a combination of a few others, but that isn’t to say it isn’t good. Maybe, King took something from Burnt Offerings and made it his own, who knows. My favorite role in the movie is the Hearse Driver. His random appearances are creepy and oddly sexy at the same time. He provokes something in me, making me want to know more about him, but I’m not given much.
The entire encounter in Burnt Offerings is twisty and dark, but I only give it 3.5 out of 5 Stars.
