You’re freaks. I’m a man. The last man. Dr. Robert Morgan
The Last Man on Earth (1964) is the first adaptation of Richard Matheson’s novel, I Am Legend. And as far as I can remember, I have not seen this film before, nor, I should add, have I read the book. I’ve seen I Am Legend from 2007, and while it has similarities, both films are completely different beasts. This one tries to be innovative but missed the mark for me, even for a 1964 B-Movie.
I wasn’t sure if they were zombies or vampires, though the lone man says they are vampires, they didn’t really act like them. They moved like zombies and carried clubs and could talk, making me wonder more about these “freaks” as Morgan calls them. So, if they can’t be in the sun, are the ones laying around dead-dead? Or can they reanimate when the sun goes down? I love how the one raised his head slightly when Morgan was searching for the dog.
The home movies he watched were creepy and strange, then morphed into a flashback of events, which was helpful in putting things together with the how’s. While this isn’t the worst B-Movie I’ve seen, it isn’t close to being the best, I do give American International Pictures credit for the effort, I can only give it 3.5 out of 5 Stars.
