You know how you get all excited about a movie coming out, and then you have to wait another year because of a pandemic? That’s how Halloween Kills (2021) was for me. Though I don’t understand why they shelved it for a year, it’s not like they didn’t stream it the same day.
So yes, this film was high up on my watch list for 2020 as I liked the previous one in this wacky world where Laurie Strode is still alive. I’m always nervous about films with Blumhouse’s name on it because they can either be super suck or outstanding. Well, Halloween Kills falls somewhere in between for me. Before seeing this, I heard someone say it was lackluster, but I wouldn’t go that far.
The things that annoyed me were the reenactment scenes and the chaos at the hospital. The flashback scenes tried to fill in the blanks of what a Halloween virgin wouldn’t know. Had they stayed with Carpenter’s world or Zombie’s, it would’ve been better.
The events at the hospital were just a waste of time; they should’ve cut it extensively as it didn’t do anything for the film. Both of those things just drew more attention to the fact that JLC wasn’t the lead as Laurie was in the hospital. If you hadn’t guessed, that was another thing that annoyed me.
What I enjoyed a lot and made me laugh a few times were Michael’s kills. But isn’t that why we watch these films? The stalking was as expected. The gore wasn’t quite to the Zombie’s level, though still excellent. Another thing that I loved was that they didn’t give a clear view of Michael after Karen removed his mask. It kept the mystique of the Form alive.
I’ve seen all the Halloween films throughout the years and I have an expectation of what should transpire in recent chapters. Halloween Kills did a good job trying to fulfill my needs, so I gave it 3.5 out of 5 Stars.
