I was hoping that Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988) would’ve kept better secrets as the first in this strange horror franchise, but it didn’t. There’s something to be said about not knowing who is doing the kills that adds more suspense than knowing upfront. I’ll get to more of that later.
It begins with a campfire story, then someone tells about what happened at Camp Arawak years before. There are some details that others around the fire tell about, that are bizarre, though, in this world believable. When a young woman comes to collect a teenage girl while she continues the tale, it’s weird, but not really in a good way, even for the 1980s.
As the film continues, I am delighted with what Angela is doing, cleaning up the camp of the impure boys and girls. While in the first film, she took care of the ones who picked on her. She’s devout now, so apparently, her therapy at the institution made her the punisher of those who sinned, which isn’t really a reach.
The deserted cabin in the woods is creepy and gross, I just wish it had remained consistent inside with the flies and the obvious rankness. Another thing, I wished for with this episode was that it had better acting. At least with the first, the overdramatic playing added to the psychotic feel. With this one, it just made it painful at times.
Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers isn’t horrible, so I gave it 3 out of 5 Stars.
