Survival films can be predictable and blasé but VFW (2020) is not one of those films; though the way it was set up at the beginning, I knew there was going to be a confrontation at the VFW (hence the name).
The cast is a great mix of talent, including Fred Parras and George Wendt. As the older soldiers talk about escapades and wars, across the street, a girl steals drugs from a dealer and tries to find solace in the VFW. The violence is present from the beginning and grows as the film progresses with blood flowing like waterfalls. Finally some gore with little to think about.
Steve Moore’s music adds the perfect nuance to every scene and isn’t overwhelming. He also did the music in Bliss (2019), both of which were produced by Joe Begos; these films are super gritty and deal with drug abuse in one way or another–I’m going to have to check out his other two films.
VFW is a great action-horror film that you need to watch. I give it 4 out of 5 Stars.
