The Platform (2019) is a socially charged horror film (something I usually don’t like) that intrigued me. The first thing that popped into my mind as it started was ‘what are they cooking with?’ and I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t people, though cannibalism does show itself.
The 99% movement came to mind as the film continued, following the idea that the people at the top can have as much as they want without worrying about the ones below. Of course, the ones at the bottom of the pit get nothing. That aside, this film’s presentation blew me away, though not all of it, there are parts that I became bored with the monotony.
Honestly, most of The Platform bored me, even when Trimagasi tied up Goreng. My attention did get reignited when he carved into Goreng and offered him a piece of his own flesh. The gross-out moments are slathered thick through most of the film, but still, I just couldn’t keep focused on it.
My biggest question throughout the film was how the platform worked. There aren’t wires or hydraulics. It just moves down without swaying to the next level down, then shoots up when it finally reaches the bottom.
The Platform had intense moments, but, for me, it was dreadfully dull for the most part, and that’s why I can only give it 2.5 out of 5 Stars.
