Leviathan (1989) #Lost80s #SciFi #HorrorMovie

SciFi Horror is always fun and Leviathan (1989) adds to the catalog, taking bits and pieces of other films like The Thing (1982) and Alien (1979). I’m not saying it’s bad, many film creators do it and it’s not so obvious, though.

Leviathan posterThe visuals are good for the most part, the only thing that I couldn’t figure out was the tubeworms; I seriously don’t know what they were supposed to be. The underwater scenes crack me up every time I see this film because it’s quite obvious that they weren’t underwater.

The creature effects are great. My favorite is the mouth in the hand, that’s truly something lurking in my nightmares to this day. The morphing of human flesh to create the final creature is so awesome. Before they show it, there’s creepy and weird rippling in the water canals in the underwater base.

The music is overwhelming most of the time and the score does little by means of helping the scenes, more like adding more noise to distract from the mediocre acting. I do love seeing actors from some of my favorite movies and TV shows, though. This one has Peter Weller as Steven Beck (Buckaroo Banzai), Amanda Pays was on the short-lived TV show Max Headroom, she was Willie in this, and last but not least Ernie Hudson aka Winston from Ghostbusters is Justin Jones.

4 Stars

Even with the flaws, oh yes there are several, Leviathan is one of my favorite SciFi Horror Films, and I give it 4 out of 5 Stars.
