I figured I knew what was going to happen when We Summon the Darkness (2019) began, and what made me the happiest about this film is that I was wrong. It begins with a group of girlfriends traveling across-country to see a concert when they are attacked with a chocolate milkshake that splatters their windshield.
Oh, I forgot to mention, this is set in the 1980s and that’s where some of the details annoyed the fuck out of me. If you’re going to do a ‘period piece’ make sure you get everything right because people like me will nit-pick everything. And I did. I guess they only got rights to use two songs from the best decade ever because most of it was like super suck.
Those details aside, I enjoyed We Summon the Darkness with its crazy storyline and stereotypical characters. The gore was OK, though there really wasn’t much of it. I did expect more B-Movie style acting (only one character took that cue), but I guess that’s another detail I’ll just have to live with.
In the end, We Summon the Darkness is a fun new era horror movie that shouldn’t be ignored. It’s on Netflix, so check it out. I give it 3.5 out of 5 Stars. Yeah, those details annoyed me.
