High Spirits (1988) is a romantic comedy with some ghosts thrown in, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have some great thrills and chills. It stars Steve Guttenberg, Daryl Hannah, Peter O’Toole, and Liam Neeson, revolving around Peter Plunkett (O’Toole) who is trying to save his family’s castle from creditors.
Ladies. Gentlemen. Children. You appear to be a trifle moist. Peter Plunkett
High Spirits reminds me of classic American International Pictures’ films with a castle covered in fake cobwebs and dust, though the characters add those bits in this one. The acting is in that vein too, with dramatic glances and over-the-top theatrics.
The special effects are simplistic with the use of superimposition, light tricks, and things on wires to fly through the rooms. When the real ghosts become fed up with Peter’s ineptness, they take over, and the fun takes off. The make-up for the ghosts isn’t the worst. This is a campy film, though, so that’s exactly what the ghosts are.
High Spirits is always a good time (for me at least). I highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for some fun cheese. I give it 4 out of 5 Stars.
