In 1991 FOX aired The Haunted. I didn’t have a TV at the time, and I was a little busy doing other things, so I didn’t see it then or know about it. In recent years, while reading about Ed and Lorraine Warren, I learned about this made for TV gem. It’s a strange little movie with low-fi effects and has a granular feeling like it was made in the 70s or 80s the time frame that the events happened.
The story follows the Smurl family, who move into a new home in Pennsylvania and quickly learn that there is more to the house than the walls. The adaption from the book, The Haunted: One Family’s Nightmare by Robert Curran & Ed and Lorraine Warren, is interesting, but not bad. I understand there were many things they had to remove or couldn’t show as it was a TV film. I like how they showed how the intensity of the situation manifested within their home.
The similarities of events between the Smurls, Perrons (The Conjuring 2013), and Lutzes (The Amityville Horror 1979) should be enough to make any skeptic a believer, but of course, there will always be those you think it’s all a scam; I am not one of those.
The Haunted is a good movie, and I say, if you come across it, watch it. I give it 3.5 out of 5 Stars.
