My birthday coincides with the 2nd day of my 30 Days of Terror. After great consideration, I decided that I should go with one that’s at least as old as me. The Dunwich Horror is the one I chose for today. If you haven’t seen it, you need to.
Gothic horror always has an extra layer of darkness and lurid scenes that I enjoy, and this classic (holy shit, am I a classic, too?) film is an amazing example of the genre. The Dunwich Horror (1970) is the adaptation of the short story of the same name by H. P. Lovecraft.
American International Pictures produced and distributed this wonder. Les Baxter (one of my favorite composers) added his charmingly bizarre music; it’s hypnotic and sensual. Dean Stockwell (Quantum Leap) and Sandra Dee take the lead roles, giving not too over the top performances where they give a taste of cheese as I expect with AIP.
The House
Oh, I don’t want to forget the house in The Dunwich Horror. On the outside, it’s the stereotypical façade of the Victorian style. The inside feels like AIP’s set designer took a piece from each of their past movies and incorporated them for my viewing pleasure. I just wonder how many times they’ve burned this house.
A few of the scenes felt like an acid trip. The unnerving color-changing negative film effects that were used perfectly to show how the monster saw the world. They used a similar effect in Wolfen with the only difference being the changing colors. The monster is amazing, and that’s all I’m going to say about it. If you’ve seen it, you know what I’m talking about. If not, you need to see The Dunwich Horror.
I give The Dunwich Horror 5 out of 5 Stars.
