For Day 3 of 30 Days of Terror, I thought that sticking with the 1970s would be a good idea. I figured The Evictors (1979) would just another copy of popular theme of 1979. I was wrong, and I think it’s one of the most under-rated horror films.
A little about The Evictors
I love it when I come across a classic movie that I’ve never seen. I especially enjoy it when I recognize actors from the era, who I’ve enjoyed in other films. The Evictors (1979) stars Jessica Harper; she was in the original Suspiria (1977), and she was also in that strange, alleged sequel to Rocky Horror Picture Show, Shock Treatment (1981), as well as many other movies I’ve seen.
I also learned that Charles B. Pierce directed The Evictors; he also directed The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976). This information gave me hope that it wasn’t going to bland because he has a great eye for making thrilling scenes. And the last tidbit of interesting information about this movie is that it is one of the final American International Pictures films.
The opening took me off guard because of the sepia filter. The scene took place in 1928 and shows a foreclosure gone wrong. I found it impressive that anytime they went back in time, they continued to use the sepia filter.
Each moment of this movie is filled with building terror and creepiness. Even the soundtrack matches the intensity, though parts of it were like nails on a chalkboard for me, which I think was intended. The set is charming, and I could’ve sworn I recognized the house from a more recent film, but at this point, I can’t confirm one way or the other. When the ending sequence begins, I was surprised about one of the antagonists, the other I suspected early one because the wig didn’t match her youth.
I enjoyed The Evictors immensely, and if you come across it, watch it. I give it 4 out of 5 Stars.
