A parasite that’s a combination aphrodisiac and venereal disease that will hopefully turn the world into one beautiful, mindless orgy. Dr. Hobbes

Shivers (1976) has quite the identify crisis, it’s also called The Parasite Murders, They Came From Within, and It Came From Within. It’s considered Science Fiction Body Horror, and for me, it was gross-out, which I love. The opening is an advertisement for an exclusive apartment complex that has everything you’d ever need and more right at your fingertips; it sounds like a cesspool of germs to me.

ShiversAfter the introduction, it is on, no holds barred, and every passing moment leads to absolute strange behavior that is eventually revealed. The effects are better than I’d expect from the mid to late 70s, though at times the parasite looked like an overcooked slice of calves liver or just a good old fashioned turd.

Shivers is a zombie-esque movie with the parasite traveling from host to host, infecting everyone in its path. I would’ve loved to jump inside David Cronenberg’s head during the hours that he toiled creating this film because this storyline is beyond what I’d expected to be created during the 70s or in Canada; it’s perverse, gross, shocking, and absolutely fucked up.

If you’re looking for something bizarre and gross with a nice amount of thrills and violent content, checkout Shivers. I give it 4 out of 5 Stars.
