Suspiria (1977) is the first in the Three Mothers series, second is Inferno (1980), which was amazing, with the final being The Mother of Tears (2007). I don’t understand the gap from Inferno to The Mother of Tears, it seems strange that it took that long to make the last movie. I saw Inferno first, but it doesn’t really matter as there isn’t a real connection between the two; that I noticed anyway.
The rock band Goblin does the soundtrack, and it’s prefect with the creepy, almost demonic, tones that it adds to the film. The acting is strange, maybe it’s because of the overdubbing of English in places.
This is another film that relies on interesting camera angles and lighting (in a multitude of colors) to set the mood of the film. I’m not saying it’s bad, I just wish the film had relied more on a cohesive story.
It’s obvious that the dance school has secrets and that it’s more than just what it’s pretending to be, though it’s never very clear what it really is. At one point, I thought it was going to be more in the apartment building that is familiar to Inferno, but it returns quickly to the dance academy with a barrage of bizarre scenes and intrigue. Is it scary? I didn’t think so. It is super creepy, though, so it had that going for it.
I liked Suspiria, but I can’t give it more than 3.5 out of 5 Stars. And no, I don’t plan on seeing the remake.
