Patient Zero (2018) isn’t technically a zombie movie as the “infected” aren’t dead, but rabid. However, the theme follows that of zombie films with the “infected” attacking and turning everyone else.
I’m unclear what the “infected” eat, but I guess I’m overthinking it. Another thing that popped into my head as I watched was if they hunt and convert every human alive, what will they do when they are done? This is my normal question when I submerge myself into anything zombie.
During the search for Patient Zero, the Professor (Stanley Tucci, the primary reason I watched this) breaks into their underground bunker to speak with Morgan (Matt Smith), who was infected but not turned and as the ability to communicate with the animal-like humans that were turned. For some reason, the turned have an adverse reaction to music, except the Professor.
I was fascinated by the story, and how they turned something that I normally find on the boring side (because of the redundancy of the theme), giving me something to enjoy. The effects weren’t anything special, though I did like the use of gold for the eyes of the “infected,” just not Morgan. The rabid rat was a nice addition, too. As Patient Zero came to a close, I threw up a little in my mouth, not because of any gore effect, but because of them riding off into the moonlight. Give me a break.
I give Patient Zero 3.5 out of 5 Stars.
