As I watched The House of Sorority Row (1983), I couldn’t help but think of Black Christmas (1974). The similarities of the two movies are uncanny, almost like this was a remake of Black Christmas without the Christmas time frame. The story follows a group of sorority sisters who plan to have a party after the semester ends, but the house mother wants them to leave.
Eileen Davidson, who I know as Kristen DiMera from Days of Our Lives, plays Vicki; her acting skills haven’t changed since this film was made. I’m not saying she’s a bad actress just more suited to these types of roles. Katherine McNeil is Katey Rose, she was in Monkey Shines, too. Like Eileen, she’s been in daytime television dramas, though nothing I’ve watched, and I’m noticing that she’s suited for this type of role, too.
I like the fact that they keep the identity of the killer a secret until near the end of the film as it helped with the suspense, and made the brutal murders more enjoyable. I wasn’t sure if they were trying to make it cheesy or if it was an accident because it isn’t smooth when it happens, but that’s OK, the movie is good even though it’s not exactly original. The blood effects could’ve been better in some scenes, while other parts were spectacular (see the toilet scene).
Even with everything I’ve said above, I like The House on Sorority Row and give it 3.5 out of 5 Stars.
