Polaroid (2019) was in the ‘I won’t die if I don’t see it’ list for 2019 Horror Movies, and the truth is, I really wouldn’t have died if I didn’t see it. Sometimes it seems like trailers show the best bits of the movie, and that’s the case with this one.
It wasn’t bad. I liked it. It just had a lot of dead space that could’ve been used to add to the story. I get it, they need to move from one place to another, but at least make those transitions a little more exciting. Polaroid has those moments of ‘why are you going in there?’ with the most prominent being at the start when a young woman goes into the attic.
The usage of shadows and dark scenes was the dominating effect. I wish there was more gore effects to satisfy my needs, but I was merely teased with what was happening with sound effects. There is a sinister feeling that lingers, but it’s only a feeling. But at least, if I so desired, I could buy my very own Polaroid SX70. I discovered this because I was curious if they still made film for them, and they do.
Polaroid had some other interesting things happening like the backstories of how the camera became to be possessed and why the spirit inhabiting is killing people who get their picture taken by the SX70. The main plot is basically a regurgitation of so many films I’ve seen and loved for years, just without gore.
Polaroid isn’t the worst thing I’ve seen from 2019, but it could’ve been so much more. I give it 3.5 out of 5 Stars as it just didn’t have the gasps I expected.
