The Furies (2019) appeared in my recommendation list the other day, so I figured, what the hell, I’ll give this Australian horror flick a shot. I did Google it first to get a feel of what it was about and watch the trailer. Here’s the description: Kidnapped and afraid, a woman finds herself fighting to stay alive as an unwilling participant in a deadly game where women are hunted by masked men. Those few words and the trailer were enough to get me to watch it.
Tony D’Aquino wrote and directed. I’d never heard of him before either, but this is his first feature-length film, and because it, I will always remember his name. The Furies is one of those movies that starts everything quickly (thank the horror gods). The opening scene gives a taste of what’s to come but doesn’t provide enough details to spoil the rest of the film.
The flesh-masks (that’s not all of the masks) are reminiscent of Leatherface, but just a little. There’s also a slight feeling of SAW, but not enough to make me cry foul for either similarity. Seeing the “beasts” is unnerving, which is what I want, and best of all there are more than one sphincter clenching moments is this visually terrifying film.
This universe that D’Aquino created is fucked up to say the least. It’s one of the most demented games I’ve ever watched played. A tag caught my eye when Kayla fought her way out of the box had her in; it said Beauty 8. My curiosity piqued, and as the story unfolds it is revealed what it means as are the rules of the game as a group of women figure them out. There are some aspects of these rules that I don’t fully understand.
The gore effects are a delight to experience. The costuming of the “beasts,” besides the masks, are well thought out. The musical score freaked me out with its ominous tones just as much as what I saw did. The “twist” wasn’t unexpected, but I liked how they presented it. I hope there’s more to come from D’Aquino and the Furies universe.
The Furies is one of those movies that I became an instant fan from the moment the film started. I give it 5 out of 5 Stars
