All hail the man behind the greasepaint.
3 From Hell (2019) is my most anticipated movie of 2019, starring Sheri Moon Zombie, Bill Moseley, Sid Haig (RIP), and Richard Brake, picking up where Devil’s Rejects (2005) left off fourteen years ago. I’m glad that Rob could get Sid on film one more time as Captain Spaulding.
The film begins in a documentary style to catch us up with what’s happened in the years since the previous installment. The interviews with Spaulding and Otis are intense, and then as this part of the film ends, we learn that Spaulding was executed. This entire sequence gives a bestial layer of reality that brings back the momentum of this dark universe.
You can only live in the now. Now is the now.
The styling of the previous films is carried over to 3 From Hell, as does the level of violence, and I’m glad for the continuity of both. If you don’t know what these films are about, you shouldn’t start with this one; these films are not for delicate, sensitive types. The blood flows and sprays in glorious fountains with bizarre slow motion as I watched bullets and arrows shoot toward their target.
With the loss of Captain Spaulding, Winslow Foxworth “Foxy” Coltrane comes forward to help Otis escape the chain gang; he’s Otis’ half-brother. He wants to live up to the expectations of his older brother and proves himself worthy of being part of this adorable family. I didn’t think Baby Firefly could be crazier, but Sheri proved me wrong with a fantastic performance.
This fucking guy really loves himself. Except he’s got a face you just wanna punch.
The film ends with a happy ending (not that kind, but it would work) as they drive off, making me wonder if we’ll be seeing more of this dysfunctional family. I loved every minute of 3 From Hell, and give it 5 out of 5 Stars.
