The Curse of Buckout Road (2019) is a recent addition to the watch list, like last week. I’d never heard of it, so I watched the trailer and thought it looked cool. But don’t they always? It debuted in 2017 at the Blood in the Snow Canadian Film Festival, then at the Orlando Film Festival in 2018, but didn’t get an actual US release date until September 2019. I hope that isn’t an omen that I shouldn’t watch it. Fingers crossed.
The film starts with scenes of Stephanie Hancock teaching a class on urban legends and her nighttime activities mixed with flashes of something else.
Enter Dr. Lawrence Powell played by Danny Glover, who is investigating her death on Buckout Road with the police. At this point in the film, and that’s no more than fifteen minutes, I’m hooked. The suspense of what is and about to happen has my attention. See, kids, you can make a movie and get to it at the beginning.
There are several urban legends in this film, which you’d think would be hard to keep straight, but the creators managed to pull off something sensational with this grouping. One thing that I wasn’t impressed with was the old film filter when they were portraying the 1970. Seriously, 1970 didn’t look like that. OK, so that was the worst thing about the movie for me, and in truth, I didn’t mind it that much.
The effects aren’t overdone or outlandish, and were done without a stich of camp in them. But that’s fine, this film didn’t need a distraction like that. Even when I expected a taste of camp from Erik and Derek, it didn’t come, and there is opportunity for them. Oh yeah, before I forget, one of my new favorite actors is in this, Dominique Provost-Chalkley. She played Waverly Earp in the SyFy series Wynonna Earp.
The use of visions/dreams brought thoughts of The Ring in places from the way they were presented, and little with the content. Maybe, that was just me. I enjoyed how they incorporated real history into the mix, too; well, a fictionalized version of it. There isn’t much they don’t touch on in this, from religion to albino killers, with an almost flawless integration. One more thing, if you don’t know it, you should look this up, Revelation 22:18-19; I prefer KJV but NIV is good, too.
The Curse of Buckout Road kept my interest, mixing a handful of stories together to make something special, and I give it 4.5 out of 5 Stars.
