Hadn’t heard of it? Yeah me either. Candy Corn (2019) showed up in my cue, so I figured I’d give it a watch; it’s only 85 minutes of my life that I’ll never get back. Apparently, it’s a Josh Hasty Production, whoever that is. Well, I guess I’ll find out. Here’s the link to his website in case you’re interested, he sounds like a cool guy.
The biggest draw for me was the fact that this film has Tony Todd, who is best known for me as Candyman, but he’s been in tons of other things since the late 80s. It also has Pancho Moler—he played Sick-Head in 31 (2016)—and in this, he plays the nefarious little fuck, Dr. Death a.k.a. Lester. His cheese level alone kept me entertained in every scene. I’ve seen a few of the other actors in TV Shows and other indie films, like Caleb Thomas and Sky Elobar.
I figured Candy Corn was going to be a standard, run-of-the-mill stalker/slasher, but it’s a bit more than that. Yes, it has those elements and more. I felt a Pumpkinhead (1988) influence as well as some other fascinating integrations of some of my favorite horror movies. Josh and crew fit everything together nicely in this dark carnival world. The gore effects are splendid in an over the top, let’s go for the gold on this one sort of way. I’m not complaining. In fact, I’m applauding. This is fix that I needed. Everything in the last few years has been so ghostly with their hauntings, and it’s so nice to see an abundance of fake blood flowing freely from a victim.
I’m a Candy Corn and Josh Hasty fan now. I give it 4 out of 5 Stars.
