Sex, drugs, punk rock, hanging out in the woods, sounds great, but will The Ranger (2018) live up to my expectations? The story follows a group of teenagers, who are the ultimate punk rock posers that I’ve ever seen. Chelsea is part of them, but not really. It’s obvious from the way that she reacts to them that she wishes she’d made better life choices.
As Chelsea’s backstory fills in throughout the film, it becomes clear as to why she’s done what she’s done. When they arrive at her cabin, I kept thinking the movie was trying to have a Friday the 13th vibe with the setting. While it has the slasher/stalker thing happening, it’s barely like Jason at all.
It felt like it took a while to get to the inevitable, but when it happened, I was satisfied. The gore is a blessing after such a long dry spell in what I’ve been seeing in horror of late, and I’ve never been so thankful for a group of characters to get slaughtered as they were truly despicable.
Hearing Most Beautiful Girl by Charlie Rich in this setting, made it so creepy, especially when the Ranger sings it as he’s walking through the woods. I’ve not said much about him, because I don’t want to spoil anything if you haven’t seen this yet. I will say that he’s is a bit OCD with the rules on top of him just being bizarre and uncomfortable to be around.
The Ranger is not one to miss. I give it 4 out of 5 Stars, so yes, it lived up to my expectations.
