#HorrorMovie Review - Soul to Keep (2018)

Soul to Keep (2015) was recommended to me. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I figured since it’s on Netflix, I’d be only losing the time. The Title Sequence sketches are amazing, so I kept watching. It starts as a typical teen horror movie with a group of kids going to a remote location.

The film is filled with interesting camera work. The minimal gore is believable and chilling, but some of the other effects are on the lame side, like bursts of light, or blood that never dried from around Grace’s mouth. There’s a reference to Stephen King’s The Dome that I didn’t understand from how they used it, but maybe, I’m overthinking that part of it.

For a low budget movie, the acting isn’t bad, with the most enjoyable being Kate Rose Reynolds, who played Grace. The rest of the cast was alright, too, just not as memorable, well until near the end for the actresses playing Erin and Tara. The creepiness they maintain throughout the film is excellent, as is the musical score.

I love it when movies surprise me, and this one did it a few times, though there weren’t scenes so intense they caused my sphincter to contract. I’m gonna say this, not intending to spoil it for you if you haven’t seen it; the conjuring scene literally gave me the chills. I wasn’t expecting the plot twist that changed the feel of this possession flick.

Soul to Keep is an excellent movie that I never expected to be as good as it is, and I give it 4 out of 5 Stars.
