Horror that isn’t horror at all is the trend of late for many movies I’ve seen this year. The Witch In The Window (2018) is what I consider horror-lite, but it’s not like the others like this that I’ve judged roughly and tossed aside with a lower than a three-star review.
This one grabbed my attention from the beginning and didn’t let me go until the credits rolled. The stories within the movie intertwined together, keeping me interested. Everything from the bizarre tale Louis, the electrician, tells, to Simon trying to reconnect with his son and estranged wife. There’s an undertone of something else happening, but it’s not revealed until the end; at first, I wasn’t sure what I was seeing, so I skipped back to watch it again.
Throughout The Witch In The Window, the thrills are subtle as the tension builds. The reveal isn’t ‘cover your eyes’ type of excitement that I prefer, but I liked it because I didn’t expect it. I also enjoyed the use of camera angles and focus for the eerie effects. Oh, did I mention there isn’t any gore in this one? It’s not a bad thing, and it wasn’t dull as a result of its absence.
I give The Witch In The Window 4 out of 5 Stars.
