I’m not sure which movie was the first to start the growing number of sensory thrillers, and I wonder as movie creators make more, why they seem to be stuck in the rut of a distinct formula. Like The Quiet Place and Bird Box, The Silence (2019) is another of those.

After watching this film, I had the distinct feeling of a prequel to The Quiet Place even though the monsters are different. So I did some digging and learned that both were made around the same time, but Tim Lebbon’s book, The Silence, was published in 2015, and he says that it’s pure coincidence. Either way, it doesn’t matter to me. I liked them both, favoring this one.

The fact that they didn’t make me sit around and wait until the last thirty minutes when they finally got to it was nice for a change. After we meet the characters, the story becomes post-apocalyptic quickly, proving that it’s possible to fit in a back story at the beginning and create an emotional bond.

The Silence has Kiernan Shipka, who plays teenager, Ally, who became deaf after an auto accident, and Miranda Otto as her mother. Interestingly enough, both are in the Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (speaking of, I haven’t started watching the second season yet). The other notable actor, to me anyway, is Stanley Tucci, who gives a wonderful performance no matter the role.

The creatures are amazingly vicious and are called Vesps. I was exhilarated seeing them from the start as with this type of movie of late, we don’t see them until the end, if at all. The gore level with their attacks was amazing to see, and the other bits I won’t mention, but it reminded me a little of Jurassic Park.

I was impressed with the twist that I hadn’t expected. Yes, on top of the Vesps circling the world attacking anything that made a sound, they added something that I found ingenious, adding a good dose of creepiness. This movie did have a moment that I rolled my eyes and groaned, and if you don’t want this spoiler, jump to my rating: another over-played bathtub scene.

Like I said earlier, I preferred The Silence more than The Quiet Place, and give it 4 out of 5 Stars.
