Usually, I don’t pay attention to reviews before watching a movie. I don’t want to get other’s opinions in my mind or get preconceived notions of what the film is. I’d rather rely on written descriptions and trailers. For some reason, when I was at Amazon looking at St. Agatha (2019), I scrolled down to the reviews, and I instantly got buyers remorse as I sweated about what these unknown dilettantes had said about it.
St. Agatha’s theatrical release date was February 8, 2019, but it premiered April 20, 2018 at The Overlook Film Festival, so I will consider it a 2019 release; this stuff is always interesting but holds little bearing on the film itself or does it? The opening scene hooked me, doing its job as it should. The film is set in 1957, and tells the story of Mary, who’s pregnant, but can’t afford the costs and hearing about a convent that will help her, she travels there to give birth.
St. Agatha has the feeling that it wants to belong in The Conjuring Universe. Had it had the possession element it might have fit in, but sorry, they already did the Nun. At one moment, it seemed like it was going to have more of a Rosemary’s Baby twist, but nope, they went a completely different direction. Don’t take my chiding of this movie that I didn’t like it. Au contraire, I almost loved it. The sadistic moments were a delight, and when we get to what was going on, I chuckled.
The soundtrack was bizarre but fitting. The set wasn’t anything extraordinary; it’s not like we haven’t seen houses like it a thousand times throughout the years. The flashback scenes helped me connect with Mary (Agatha), though, they weren’t needed, but without them, the movie wouldn’t have made ninety minutes. The acting was good, but no one stood out as mind-blowing, and my favorite character was Sarah.
Back to what I had said at the beginning about the Amazon reviews. I saw many that were one star with the comment waste of time. I 100% disagree with all of those. It was not a waste of time, but it definitely is one of those movies that not everyone is going to like/love.
I give St. Agatha 4 out of 5 Stars.
