The suspense as well as the strangeness of Ánimas (2018) kept me interested after the first twenty minutes. Before that point, I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue watching. I found the camera angles intriguing; I don’t see them as much in current horror as was done in the 1950s and 1960s.
One of the things that was really creepy was the green lighting, and I’m glad that the reason for it doesn’t come to light until the end. Oh, I should warn you, if you are wanting a movie that is in English, this isn’t for you. It’s in Spanish with English subtitles, though most of the soundtrack are English tracks, which I found strange.
Best friends Álex and Abraham have a lengthy relationship, and both have their singular problems; she is a cutter, and he has an abusive father, and despondent mother, which aren’t new stories, but great ways to connect with the audience. Their relationship becomes rocky when Abraham meets Anchi, and Abraham believes Alex was responsible for hitting his father with the car.
I did not expect the twist at all, and I was surprised with the way they ended things. Both were done wonderfully, making me forget the dull moments at the beginning. However, even with the twist, this isn’t one of those movies that I’m jumping out of my chair about, nor am I pounding my fist on the table, telling you to stop everything and watch this movie.
I think they could’ve pushed what Alex experienced further, and because of that, I give can only give Ánimas 3 out of 5 Stars.
