Honestly, I don’t understand the hype about Velvet Buzzsaw (2019), but at least I got another one watched from my 2019 watch list. I had high expectations for Velvet Buzzsaw (2019), and for the most part I wasn’t disappointed. One thing I’m noticing, and something that I need to get used to with this new age of horror movies is the new formula producers are using for horror: Opening hook, a long period of not necessarily bland, but very low-key building scenes, finished up with the meat of things. The last negative I’ll say is that Velvet Buzzsaw is horror-lite for most of the movie, strange but not horror, dark but not horror, and uncomfortable at times.
Jake Gyllenhaal gives a great performance as I’ve come to expect from him, and I’m impressed with his shredded chest and abs. Toni Collete wasn’t much different from anything else I’ve ever seen her in, which always reminds me of another her personalities from when she played Tara in United States of Tara; I’m not saying she’s a bad actress, quite the opposite.
I enjoyed the movie because of the strange, dark tone that it took from the opening scene to the end, which I guess was the satirical element. I loved the art pieces that Josephina discovered in the apartment, though I’m still unsure how their magical powers worked, besides that the paint had been mixed with blood; how did that bring other paintings or sculptures to life? My favorite painting scene was with the monkeys in the abandoned gas station.
At times, I thought the movie was dragging on longer that it needed, but the minimal effects appeased me with more interest than the down-time. I give Velvet Buzzsaw 3.5 out of 5 Stars. It’s on Netflix if you want to check it out.
